Hence, in extreme sports where the possibility of injury is high, flow is a regular experience. If you don’t land that trick, you could be in the hospital. Immediate feedback.If you want more flow in your life, you need to get faster and harder feedback for your behavior. You need to feel the consequences of your performance. You need to be in the Results Economy - not the Time and Effort Economy.In fact, one of the ways to produce more flow in your life is by creating much, much shorter timelines. Give yourself only 60 minutes to write the article and then, once the timer goes off, push publish regardless of what you came up with. Tell your partner or adviser that you’ll have your work to them far sooner than they expect. Make your goals public, with public deadlines.You can create immediate feedback for your behavior in the form of “forcing functions.” According to entrepreneur, Dan Martell, “A forcing function is any task, activity or event that forces you to take action and produce a result.”A forcing function is exactly how it sounds - something external that’s been put in place to FORCE YOU TO FUNCTION how you desire to function.An example Dan Martell uses is a story between him and his younger brother, Moe. Dan asked Moe about his business goal for the next 3 months, to which Moe told him the goal.Then Dan asked, “Based on today’s understanding of the work involved, etc. how likely would you be to hit your goal in 3 months?”“Hmmmm, proba bly 60â€"70% I would guess,” Moe answered.Then Dan asked, “Whose the most important person in your life?”“My wife,” Moe replied.“I then asked him to visualize a person with a gun to the head of his wife, and he knew - 100,000% that if he didn’t hit his goal within 3 months that the guy would pull the trigger. There wasn’t a doubt in his mind that the trigger would be pulled…. How likely are you to hit your goal?” Dan asked.“100%, there isn’t a doubt I could do it” Moe said.So what changed?MOTIVATION.That’s the power of a forcing function. It’s something that’s embedded within the situation that forces you to succeed. It forces motivation to happen. Because if you don’t produce a RESULT, there will be immediate feedback.To quote historian Will Durant, “I think the ability of the average man could be doubled if it were demanded, if the situation demanded.”Motivation and environment are two inextricably connected things. Motivation ISN’T INTERNA L - but situational.If you want more motivation, you need a more demanding situation. Your behavior needs to be consequential - and the more immediate the feedback the better. The more consequential your behavior, the more flow you’ll have in your life. The more you’ll be forced to adapt and grow.Do You Have Skin In The Game?“Bureaucracy is a construction by which a person is conveniently separated from the consequences of his or her actions.” - Nassim Nicholas TalebIn the recent book, SKIN IN THE GAME, Nassim Nicholas Taleb explains that if your behavior doesn’t bear immediate consequence, your performance will be low. Even more than that though - if your performance isn’t consequential, then you don’t really care about what you’re doing.As Taleb explains:“If you do not take risks for your opinion, you are nothing.”“How much you truly “believe” in something can be manifested only through what you are willing to risk for it.”From a psychological persp ective, you are either “approaching” something or trying to “avoid” something from happening.Offense or defense.Unfortunately, if you’re in the Time and Energy Economy, you’re probably also “avoidance”-oriented. In other words, your only concern is about avoiding getting in trouble, or avoiding getting caught, or avoiding doing much work at all.Only those in the Results Economy, whose behavior is consequential - the more immediate the better - are on offense. They are the one’s taking risks. They’re less concerned about the ground they’ve made and more concerned about advancing their position. They’re fine taking more risks. They’re fine putting important things on the line, because they are convicted about what they’re doing.Hence, Telab explains, “What matters isn’t what a person has or doesn’t have; it is what he or she is afraid of losing.” If you’re afraid of losing what you’ve currently got, you probably won’t risk it. You’ll proba bly do everything you can to AVOID losing it. And therefore, you’ll have given up your WHY. You’ll have stunted your progression.The more you have to lose, the more fragile you become. The more you become a slave to your current position and thus stop seeking to take risks for what you believe in.The Only Types Of Relationships That Become “Exponential”There are two types of relationships: transaction-based or transformation-based.Most relationships are transactional - where one party makes the rules and the other party submits. Once one of the members of the group is unsatisfied by the terms of the relationship, it ends. People in these relationships are usually “takers,” not genuine givers.In transformational relationships - both people are “givers” who contribute to the ongoing evolution of the relationship. The whole becomes different from the sum of the parts. There is high expectations in these relationships, but also openness.Both parties are completely inve sted in the relationship. Yet, unlike transaction-based relationships, both parties are also completely free.They give because they WANT TO, not because they feel obligated to.That is perhaps the definition of successful relationships - to get other people to help you BECAUSE THEY WANT TO, not because they’ve been manipulated to.According to Pearson’s Law: “When performance is measured, performance improves. When performance is measured and reported back, the rate of improvement accelerates.”Transformational relationships have embedded accountability. Performance matters - because both parties are invested in the relationship and both parties deal with the consequences/outcomes of performance. Complete honesty is essential.Does your behavior matter to those around you?What about the people around you? Are these relationships transactional or transformational?If transactional - then one person is a slave to the other. They are walking on egg-shells. They’re doing everyth ing they can to avoid a negative outcome. They aren’t really contributing. No one in these types of relationships can truly be happy.ConclusionIf you are paid based on performance, your pay will go up.If you get immediate feedback with natural consequences of your behavior - you’ll be in a flow state more. Your performance will increase. Your pay will increase. Your happiness will increase. It’s not great power that creates great responsibility. It’s great responsibility that creates power. It’s not confidence that creates success. It’s successful behavior that creates confidence. It’s not personality that creates behavior. It’s behavior that creates personality. If you want to true freedom in your life, you need to take responsibility. Freedom can only exist with consequence - not from the absence of consequence. You are only free when your behavior matters.The only way to increase the freedom in your life is by making your behavior matter more - and by experiencing the REAL consequences of your behavior.The only way to have freedom in your relationships is when both parties have skin in the game. When both parties in invested. I take it very seriously, and I encourage all of my direct  reports to apply it to their direct reports, all the way down the organization to the most junior levels. This is hard to do, and were certainly not perfect at executing the rule all  the time, but we come pretty close.” And  Ryan Blair, author of Nothing to Lose, Everything to Gain: “It is my goal to be in awe of every person I hire. I want to see traits in her or him that are more dynamic or more positive than my own abilities in that area, because I know that simply by working with that person, I will be able to grow and the company will prosper, thanks to this continuous reach for improvement.” But while experts are extolling the virtues of hiring people who are better than their bosses, employees are often grumbling about the very same thing. How many times have we heard friends, relatives, coworkers, or ourselves complain about incompetent leaders and managers. Employees, by and large, still ascribe to a traditionally hierarchical approach to the workplace: we want our bosses to be smarter than us; if they aren’t, their leadership is illegitimate, and we feel they should be removed from their positions. Employees â€" it’s time we readjust our thinking. If we’re smarter than our bosses, then, by most accounts, our bosses are actually doing something right. With that, I offer three tips for employees who find that they are smarter than their bosses, with the hopes that they’ll stop complaining and start seeing the benefits of their situations. Oh, and if our CEO, Miles, is reading this â€" these totally are not culled from personal experience. You’re somehow both the best CEO ever and the smartest guy in the room. Please don’t fire me. 1. Realize that They Made the Right Decision According to Blair, the semi-legendary Bill Gates makes a habit of hiring people who are smarter than he is. Libin jokes that, thanks to his hiring practices, he’s the dumbest person at Evernote â€" and maybe that’s exactly why his company was Inc.’s Company of the Year in 2011. The point is: if your boss hired you, and you are smarter than they are, then your boss made the right decision. You may be smarter, but your boss clearly knows how to manage. Take your boss’s willingness to hire a smarter subordinate as a sign of your boss’s strong management practices. And if your boss didn’t hire a smarter employee on purpose? If your boss still manages you poorly and tries to assert dominance? Recognize that you may be in a position to change that. 2. Flaunt What You’ve Got   Your boss hired a smarter employee because they saw your potential. They saw the talent you could bring to the table. Don’t go hiding your light under a bushel, then. It can be tempting to downplay your skills. You don’t want to seem like you’re challenging the boss’s authority. However, downplaying your skills is exactly what the boss doesn’t want you to do. Smarter employees are good for the company â€" show off your skills and watch your employer grow. 3. Learn from Each Other Of course, while you’re busy showing off your skills, don’t let it all go to your head. You may be smarter than your boss with respect to the job that you do, but a boss who knows to hire smarter employees is a boss who knows how to manage a workplace. You’re great at what you do â€" and, chances are, your boss is great at what they do. So learn from your boss: see the way they manage people who are smarter than them; watch how they lead a group of people who excel in the very fields that the boss fails. Use these lessons to inform your own habits as an employee. You may be a boss one day, and you can draw from your own bosses’ best practices. And even if you never are in charge of a team, you’ll still be working with other people all your life, both in and out of the office. You won’t always be the smartest person in the room. And, of course, a great boss knows to learn from their employees as well. As Libin says, “I interact with roughly 30 Evernote people on a daily basis, and I can say without hesitation that they all do their jobs better than I could hope to. Every time we have a discussion about work, I learn something.” Of course, when all is said and done, some bosses who hire smarter employees  are  incompetent. If your boss really is terrible well, thats a much sadder story for another day.

Many law enforcement agencies have difficulty not only identifying and hiring qualified candidates but keeping them as well. High Attrition in Law Enforcement You’ve probably seen multiple news stories about the critical shortage of personnel in professions like nursing and teaching, but probably not so much about the shortage of police officers. In fact, you  have  probably  never heard of a study by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Analysis Center which showed the attrition rate for police officers (14 percent) is higher than both nursing (12 percent) and teaching (13 percent). Opportunities Abound for Qualified Candidates The great news for you is that most police departments are in a constant hiring cycle. With so many officers retiring or resigning each year, there are almost always vacancies, which means there are ample opportunities for you to get hired. Before you do, though, you need to understand why it’s so difficult for police to hire qualified officers, to begin with, and what it will take for you to qualify for a job as a police officer. Decreasing Pool of Potential Police Most people understand that law enforcement careers aren’t for everyone, but it seems, at least anecdotally, that the pool of available candidates continues to shrink. Several factors have converged to make it more difficult than ever to find good officers, and diminish interest in policing careers. Relatively Low Pay First, even though more and more people are earning college degrees, salaries for law enforcement officers â€" especially starting salaries, don’t reflect the higher earning expectations of newer generations of job candidates. What many younger job seekers fail to recognize, though, are the benefits of trading a lower salary for an earlier and potentially much more lucrative retirement situation at the end of their career. Disqualifying Behaviors Another, even more, difficult obstacle to overcome for departments are the evolving tolerances of society as a whole for minor crimes and illicit drug use. As the culture accepts the use of marijuana and other drugs, and as the trend towards legalization of pot continues, more and more young people engage in behaviors that will ultimately keep them from getting a criminal justice job. Lack of Physical Fitness The increasingly sedentary lifestyle of younger generations, the increased occurrence of obesity, and the relatively low fitness level of so many people have also lead to a smaller group of potential police officer candidates. With the potentially demanding physical rigors of police work, departments are finding that fewer job applicants can meet their weight and physical fitness standards. Credit Issues Affect Hireability Financial concerns, too, have decreased the pool of candidates. During the background investigation, most agencies run a credit check. While they are typically not so concerned with the individual credit score, they won’t hire people who are so indebted that they wont be able to meet their obligations with the salary they’ll earn, or people who have significant debts that have been turned over to collections. Plan Early to Stay Qualified With the need for qualified officers so high, you have plenty of opportunities and options to get hired in a law enforcement career. You can’t, however, change your past. Take care now to avoid the kinds of mistakes that will keep you out of a job, and understand that, when it comes to many criminal justice careers, seemingly simple mistakes can have long-term consequences. The bottom line is that most police departments, especially at the state and local levels, need good people. And though the pay is not as high as other criminal justice careers, there are still plenty of great reasons to become a police officer. If you’d like to join the force, you simply need to start now to get yourself prepared for a long and rewarding career.

But if you are feeling fed up in your current role, it can compound that feeling and zap your motivation for your day-to-day reality. You need the job you have to fuel your professional reinvention, so try not to get so focused on your plans for the future that you get sloppy in the here and now and jeopardize your current gig. If you are looking for a new job, then you are also planning an exit strategy to remove yourself from your current situation. Keep your exit strategy clean. If there has been drama or undue stress at your current job, try to put your feelings about that into perspective. You are handling this. You are doing the legwork to secure a better fit.   Try to keep yourself as emotionally organized as you can. Don’t use job searching at work as a strategy to cope when you get frustrated with a job that no longer suits you. That will make you feel desperate about your search, unmotivated about your current job and emotionally chaotic. You need to stay in control of this situation, and one way you do that is by understanding and managing how you feel about it.   Job searches take time; plan for at least three months. Once your search heats up, you will need to ask for time out of the office, maybe at odd hours, perhaps even a couple of days or weeks in a row. Be on your most professional behavior in support of your search and in preparation for your exit. This will simplify the task of getting the flexibility you need. Professionalism begets professionalism. Action items Take care of your search-related action items out of the office during lunch. Answer your emails privately on your phone. If you need to make phone calls, head out of the office to do so. Go to your car or your favorite coffee shop and make sure that no one from work is around when you conduct your phone interviews or follow-ups. These items are time sensitive and need attention immediately, but take care of them discretely.     Searching Trolling around for opportunities isn’t time-sensitive, and you don’t want to get busted perusing Simply Hired posts while you are supposed to be working. Reviewing job ads takes time and focus. It’s easy to get absorbed in the project, and to someone who wanders in and sees what’s on your screen it’s obvious what you are doing. This scenario is uncomfortable and unprofessional. Avoid it. Search job postings privately. Internal job searching Companies have a variety of policies when it comes to internal job searching. Before you launch an internal search, find out how that works with your employer and decide if you are comfortable with the arrangement. If you opt to go for it, keep in mind that hiring a new staff member away from another team is always delicate news to share on the management side, so those interviewing you probably share your aim to keep it confidential until there is news to report. But don’t be shy to state your privacy concerns directly during your interview.   You are not doing anything deceitful or wrong by pursuing an internal opportunity, but you have every right to request discretion. Also be discrete with you calendar and make sure to block your interviews as private appointments.         Remember You want to be in control of this news, so don’t tip your hand until there’s a new job offer in it.
