How seasonal shifts impacts productivity (and how to cope)

How seasonal shifts impacts productivity (and how to cope)How seasonal shifts impacts productivity (and how to cope)While seasonal affective disorder is commonly discussed when the temperature drops below freezing, any shift in weather can cause you to feel off kilter. Especially when you transition from the relaxing, low key days of summer to the year-end planning meetings of autumn, you may struggle to find your rhythm. Career expert and author Caroline Vazzana says much like school children returning to the classroom, the back to work attitude is in full force in September. It seems that all of the big projects pick back up in the fall and workload increases. This can result in a employees feeling overwhelmed and overworked, she explains. To help you meet deadlines, reap a solid performance review and finish the quarter strong, here, experts give their best advice on how to remain productiveRecognize that this is bedrngnis a mythMuch like anything that puts a wrench in your routine , chief engagement and brand officer at EHE Joy Altimare says acceptance is the first step to pushing forward. Or in other words understand that what you might be feeling is completely normal. And its backed by medicine. Scientists know there are a lot of biological and physiological reasons our moods tend to change with the season, but one of the biggest factors in seasonal mood swings is light, she explains. The scientific evidence determines the amount of daily vitamin D is the main seasonal variable that affects mood, according to the US National Library of Medicine National Institute of Health. How does this work? Its all internal Our bodys circadian clock monitors the day length and tells us when to feel sleepy and when to wake up. It regulates other systems in our body, like hormone release, temperature regulation, metabolism, and mood, she continues. So when theres less light during the day, some of those processes affected by the circadian clock, including ones that influenc e our mood, get disrupted. Therefore, when you feel a bit more sluggish during the fall and winter months, acknowledge that it is normal, seasonal effects.Make a listWhen youre still paying off that credit card bill from the beach vacation you took, packing up your swimsuits and battling allergies from foliage, remembering to return emails, prepare for meetings and other work tasks might fall to the wayside. Everyone has moments of feeling scattered-brained, but Vazzana says one way to collect your cognitive willpower is to make a list. The very act of checking off an item- physically or digitally- will have you feel accomplished and empowered to tackle another one ASAP.Adopt a balanced lifestyleTo live a long life - and thus have a robust career - Altimare says its important to pay attention to how you eat, think and move every single day. She believes the connection between these three dynamics ensures your happiness and your ability to perform to your best ability in (and out o f) the office. Get up and move every day. Daily movement, especially, during the fall/winter months, can be a big mood enhancer and positively impact stress, she continues. And with your diet? Altimare says it might be easy to eat comfort foods when its cool, try to balance the simple carbs, sugar-filled foods with fruits, veggies, proteins and complex-carbs and lots of water. Youll feel more energetic and the brain power you need to make good decisions at work and at home, she adds.Set goals - and celebrateWhile you should set goals for yourself every quarter according to Vazzana, if youre failing at focusing, theres no better time to consider the future instead of getting yperit in the present. Once youve determined where you hope to be by the time the first frost hits, you can decide how youll reward yourself for meeting your benchmarkers. If you do meet your goals, reward yourself with a new product youve been eyeing or a fun night out. Its important to always celebrate and ackno wledge your accomplishments, she explains.Spend time with friendsTrue story a belly laugh with your best friend can solve anything. Or a fulfilling date night with your partner. Altimare says when youre struggling to focus at work, make sure your time out of the office eases your nerves and angst.Work out with your girlfriends, sign-up for a language class with a pal, or invite friends over to have a healthy potluck, she explains. Ive found feeling like a belong and having a tribe Im connected to with activities planned helps me stay productive, personally and professionally

Sun Train Shines New Life on Vintage Rail

Sun Train Shines New Life on Vintage Rail Sun Train Shines New Life on Vintage Rail Sun Train Shines New Life on Vintage RailThe Byron Bay Train is an excursion line that runs on a 1.8-mile stretch of track along the Australian coast near Sydney. The bay is known for its beaches, surf, and wildlife. The vintage trainwhich originally ran on an 82-mile line that was active from 1894 to 2004 has also achieved renown its been retrofitted to run entirely off of solar power. From the ground, the 100-passenger, two-car train is a charming throwback, looking much like it did when it was first built in 1949. The 128 flexible thin film solar panels, capable of generating 6.4 kW, have been incorporated into the roof of the cars.Even when the sun is hidden behind clouds, the inverter is showing that we are still exporting at 17 kW into the grid. Tim Elderton, managing director, Lithgow Railway Workshop The 128 flexible thin-film solar panels are capable of generating 6.4 kW of ele ctricity. Image Byron Bay Railroad CompanyThe panels recharge a battery pack that enables the trainto travel 50 kilometers on level gelnde at speeds of up to 60 km per hour. The batteries can also draw from a 30 kW photovoltaic array mounted on the railcar shed roof at the main station. That array can recharge the electric train battery pack in less than 30 minutes. When the train isnt being recharged, the solar panels feed electricity to the grid, says Tim Elderton, managing director for Lithgow Railway Workshop, which was contracted by Byron Bay Railroad Company for the trains solar power conversion. A local green energy provider pays the railroad for the excess electricity. Also for You Trains Send Power to the Grid.Even when the sun is hidden behind clouds, the inverter is showing that we are still exporting at 17 kW into the grid, Elderton says. For me being a career railway mechanical engineer, I still find it astounding that a railway company can make money from exporting powe r generated by solar power, rather than the more conventional situation of spending money on diesel fuel to power trains. The train previously had 300-horsepower Cummins diesel engines. One was ripped out and replaced with an electric drive unit, while the other was retained for ballast weight for wheel traction. The other engine can be used should something ever go wrong with the electric drive unit or solar charging system, Elderton says. There were challenges in the conversion, especially when installing the engine, transmission, piping, and cabling. The total conversion cost roughly U.S. $650,000. It included modifications like installing electric air compressors to operate the air brakes, and replacing all lighting with LEDs to reduce power consumption. The vintage train is off to a successful start, with more than 10,000 passengers in its first 20 days. A restoration project of a museum piece suddenly has turned into a business opportunity for Lithgow Railway Workshop and Byron B ay Railroad, which are receiving inquiries for solar-powered trains. The two companies are planning to form a joint venture to manufacture and export the technology. The Byron Bay train is still new and runs only a short distance, but with battery-powered cars and freight trucks on their way, solar panels could play a role in modernizing trains. Its easy just ask them. Research shows narcissists feel so good about themselves they dont mind admitting it.And narcissism can be quite beneficial in the short term. They make fantastic first impressions. In job interviews and onfirst dates, narcissists get results. And in youth, being a narcissist makes you happier.Narcissists are more likely to become leaders and narcissists who obsessively work hard are more likely to get promoted. But thestuff that works for them so well in the short term proves lethal in the long term. That job interview is great but UPenn prof Scott Barry Kaufmanexplains that after three weeks people regard narcissists as untrustworthy. And narcissists might becomeleaders but theyre not good ones. And when prestige isnt on the line, most narcissists dont work that hard. From The Narcissism Epidemic Living in the Age of Entitlementcollege students with inflated views of themselves (who think they are better than they actually are) make poorer grades the longer they are in college. You may have a narcissistic boss, co-worker or family member. Luckily, there are answ ers2) Kiss Up Or Shut UpYeah, this isnt a popular answer either. Sorry. But if youre dealing with a narcissist and youre in the less powerful position (like theyre your boss) there may not be a choice. At least not right now.Clinical psychologist Al Bernstein recommends you kiss up to them or at least keep your mouth shut until you can get the heck out of there.ViaAm I The Only Sane One Working Here? 101 Solutions for Surviving Office InsanityThere is no way around this. If you want to communicate effectively with narcissists, you have to admire them, their achievements, and their toys as much as they do. Typically, this wont require any great effort. Theyll be more than happy to come up with reasons to congratulate themselves. All you have to do is listen and look interested.Theres this concept called narcissistic injury. Pointing out a narcissist isnt all they think they are can be like pulling the pin on a grenade. A grenade you have to see every day of your life.Realize that nar cissismis an identity, just like religion or politics. When you argue about it, people dont fold or change their minds - they just hate you. And narcissists are among the most vindictive people youll ever meet. You mightreply, But Im right about them You may very well be. But that only makes the situation worse. Burst their narcissistic bubble and you will pay. Dearly. And if youre in the lower-power position in this relationship, as with an employer, well, youmay have found a way to get away from them along with two weeks severance.Reject them and theyll freak out. Act weak and theyll try to victimize you. Expose them and theyll hate you forever. (Trust me, Ive tested all these personally - and in a single conversation.) Its just not worth it.(To learn how to improve your self-esteem without becoming a narcissist, clickhere.)Alright, heres where the rubber meets the road. If you cant get away from them, and they dont have power over you, how do you deal with a narcissist?3) Know Wh at You Want And Get Payment Up FrontDont expect fairness. Theyre just about themselves, right? Well, okay then.Know what you want. (They will, trust me.)And then get them to pay up front with whatever it is you need before they get what they need.Al Bernstein explainsNever extend credit to, or accept promises from, a narcissist. As soon as they get what they want, they will be on to the next thing, forgetting whatever they said they would do for you.Sometimes they make promises they dont intend to keep, but just as often, they merely forget. Either way, you should keep a ledger in your mind and make sure you get what they dangle in front of you before you give them what they want. With other people, this mercenary approach might seem insulting. Narcissists will respect you for it. Everything in their world is quid pro quo. They will rarely be offended by people looking out for themselves.Dealing with a narcissist regularly is likehaving a pet tiger you always have to be careful that one day hes gonna see you as dinner. But if you dont have a choice, negotiate hard. This is nobody to be win-win with.Always reward behavior, neverwords. They get what they want when they do what you want. Now Ive been very negative toward narcissists (understandably) but theycan be worked with and can even be good employees. Yes, really. Why? Because they want something. They really needto look good. And if you can align your desireswith their desires, you mayfind yourself with an unstoppable achievement machine. From The Narcissism Epidemic Living in the Age of EntitlementOne possibility is to platzdeckchen up a situation where acts of caring and kindness are aligned with admiration and success. In other words, show narcissists that they can get their narcissistic needs met by acting like decent, caring people.Give them a way to be impressive if they do what they are told. This makes them much easier to deal with than lazy people, trust me.Just make sure you get what you want first. (To learnhow to negotiate from the FBIs lead hostage negotiator, click here.)But what if youre not in a position to reward them with what they crave? How can you keep a rampaging narcissist in line?4) Ask Them, What Would People Think?Narcissists dont feel guilt, only shame.Theyre all about appearances, right? If they believesomethingwill hurt their reputation, they will think twice.Al Bernstein explainsIf you are in a position to advise, ask what people would think. Narcissists are not stupid there are just things, like other peoples feelings, that they rarely consider. If you have their ear, dont tell them how people might react instead, ask probing questions. Narcissists are much more likely to act on ideas that they think they thought up themselves.Emphasize community and use disappointment, rather than anger, to keep them in line. They want to look good. So help them look good by helping them do good.(To learn an FBI behavior experts secrets for how to get people to like you, cli ck here.)This piece is about how to deal with narcissists well, what if the narcissist is you? Its an epidemic, remember? And if youre not a narcissist, you might be infected. As the studies show, plenty of others have been recently. So how do you avoid becoming a narcissist - or stop being one?5) Be DexterWe all have some narcissism in us. Its natural. And narcissism may work for you now but, as we saw, the odds are very very much against it bringing you success, good relationships and happiness in the long term.So how do you stop being a narcissist or make sure you dont become one? You need to make sure you maintain empathy for others.Stop trying to stand out, get attention and be so darn special. Al Bernstein saysNarcissists will be further damaged by just about any situation in which they are treated as different from ordinary people. Its okay to be ordinary. (And ifthat concept terrifies you, you are already on the narcissistic side of things, so read this piece on empathy now.)P roblem is, overcoming narcissism is hard and takes a long time. And if youre a hard-working narcissist, it may be bringing you enough rewards in the short term to feel like its a good idea for the long term. What do you do then? New startup Nectome promises to kill you and theres a waiting list

New startup Nectome promises to kill you and theres a waiting listNew startup Nectome promises to kill you - and theres a waiting listWhat if you could upload your brain to the cloud?Your legacy would be archived, your personal triumphs would be remembered by your descendants forever. It may sound like science fiction to live on as a computer program, but it may one day become a reality. Nectome, a new startup founded by two MIT graduates backed by Y Combinator, is committed to the goal of archiving your mind by using a brain banking technique to recreate your mind, according to its website.Theres just one catch before your mind gets uploaded - youll need to be dead first.Thats because the brains need to stay fresh and the embalming procedure involved with backing up your brain is 100% fatal, Nectomes co-founderRobert McIntyre acknowledged. The science of living foreverThere is no current way to retrieve memories from dead brain tissue, but Nectome believes the technology will adva nce quickly enough to be here within the next 100 years. Currently, we can preserve the connectomes of animal brains and are working on extending our techniques to human brains in a research context, Nectome states. The company has some big-name backers who also believe it could be the company to achieve this scientific feat. Nectomes work recently won an $80,000 prize for preserving a pigs brain in microscopic detail. And seeing dollar signs, the U.S. National Institute of Mental Health granted McIntyre a $960,000 federal grant because we foresee commercial opportunity in offering brain preservation and processing.Nectome told MIT Technology Review that it plans to test its high-tech embalming procedure on people with terminal illnesses. After being anesthetized, these clients would be hooked up to a heart-lung machine and have embalming chemicals pumped into their carotid arteries. As part of this plan, the company said it has consulted lawyers knowledgeable with California laws th at permit doctor-assisted suicide for terminal patients.Theres a wait listCurrently, we need to rely on humans to remember us and have our legacies live on. A service like Nectome would outsource that work to a machine. But if you think your memories are worthy of being artificially preserved forever, recognize that not just anyone is going to be able to upload their memories.Right now, the Nectome service is not available to be publicly bought. You need to have the ability to pay a deposit of $10,000 just to get in line to get your brain embalmed. This number may seem absurdly high for a waiting queue, but in Silicon Valley, where avoiding mortality at all costs is profitable, there is a willing and eager market.I assume my brain will be uploaded to the cloud, said Y Combinator president Sam Altman, who is one of 25 paying customers.

The Top Retirement Savings Plans Explained

The Top Retirement Savings Plans Explained The Top Retirement Savings Plans Explained There are countless ways that consumers can start saving for their retirement years. For working people, this most often means taking advantage of the group retirement savings plans that are offered by an employer. In many cases, employers match at least a portion of pre-tax dollars put aside for this purpose. Employee Benefits Designed for Retirement Savings Planning   There are a number of financial products that help employees manage their money and plan for retirement. The most common financial benefits include Individual Retirement Arrangements (IRA), Retirement Savings Plans and Tax-Sheltered Annuity Plans, Simplified Employee Pensions (SEP), Profit-Sharing, Defined Benefits, Employee Stock Ownership Plans (ESOP), and other qualified deferred compensation plans. Individual Retirement Arrangements (IRA) Currently, there are a couple of IRAs for eligible employees, the Traditional IRA and the Roth IRA. Both plans allow employees to designate a specific pre-tax dollar amount of earnings to a tax-deferred account. The Traditional account is for employees up to age 70 1/2 and the Roth is for those who are any age. The IRS sets certain limits for how much an employee may contribute to an IRA, based on a number of criteria. Employers may also match a portion or all of the employees funding to an IRA, up to these IRS approved limits. Retirement Savings Plans Working adults can put away pre-tax earnings for retirement planning. A Retirement Savings Plan, such as 401(k), gives employees the opportunity to contribute a portion of wages to individual accounts, and employers may also contribute to these plans to increase the investment. Distributions of 401(k) funds, including earnings, are included in taxable income at retirement. This is one of the most popular types of retirement planning option because its conservative and easy to manage. Tax Sheltered Annuity Plans Another way to put away for retirement is the Tax Sheltered Annuity or a 403 (b), which is designed specifically for public service workers, such as teachers at public schools and employees of certain 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Employees and employers may contribute to this plan. Simplified Employee Pensions (SEP) Unlike other types of retirement plans, the Simplified Employee Pension (SEP) is funded by employer contributions only. A SEP can be used by any size employer, and the funds must be equal amounts for all employees, delivered at least once per plan year. Employees are 100% invested from day one. Profit Sharing Many companies still offer profit-sharing programs that supplement regular retirement savings plans. Each year, if the company makes a profit, these funds may be distributed either in each eligible employees year-end paychecks, or allocated to their SEP, IRA, or 401(k) account. Defined Benefits A fixed, pre-established financial benefit given by employers to eligible employees at their retirement. The employer puts a specific percentage of the employees earnings into a savings account, to be used specifically for retirement funding. This amount must be reported each year by the employer and is considered taxable income. Not to be confused with defined contribution plans, which is a set amount of money provided by an employer to be used for health insurance and medical costs. Employee Stock Ownership Plans (ESOP) Instead of cash benefits, employers may also offer retirement funding in the form of Employee Stock Ownership Plans (ESOP), which allows employees to buy company stock at current market rates during specific time periods. In some cases, the company may simply grant stock ownership of a certain amount of stock or sell stock at a lower than the public rate during each earnings quarter as part of a compensation negotiation. As you start planning for your retirement years, it is clear that there are many options to put away funds that can support your lifestyle ten and even twenty years after you stop working. Check with your employer for more information about retirement savings benefits that may be available to you.

26 signs youre a great boss even if it doesnt feel like it

26 signs you're a great boss â€" even if it doesn't feel like it 26 signs you're a great boss - even if it doesn't feel like it It’s not always easy being in charge.Overseeing others comes with a ton of pressure. And when you’re in a management position, it can be difficult to evaluate how you’re doing.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! Are you striking the right balance between commanding respect and appearing accessible? Are your employees responding well to your style of leadership? Are any of your actions breeding resentment in the office?Being a good boss is crucial for your organization - a third of employees in one survey revealed that they’d quit a job because of a bad manager,  as Business Insider previously reported. But you can’t exactly go wandering around the office begging people to tell you how you’re doing. You’re better off organizing employee satisfaction surveys and soliciting feedback from your direct reports. You can also take a look at these other, more subtle signs t hat you’re killing it as a boss:You don’t have obvious favorites  Playing favorites is a great way to torpedo office morale. If you make it clear that a certain person is the apple of your eye no matter what, then that’ll just encourage your other employees to give up on trying to impress you. You treat your employees like human beings Unfortunately, some bosses seem to feel that hurling insults and abuse at people is an effective motivational technique. In most cases, this simply isn’t true. If you value your employees as human beings, then you’re already a huge step above many managers. You’re willing to try new thingsGood bosses adopt certain methods because they’re the best way of doing things - not because they’ve just fallen into certain habits. The best managers give their employees a little room to experiment and innovate. In fact, according to a study conducted by leadership development consultancy Zenger/Folkman, young people tend to make better managers  partly because they’re open to change. You hold everyone accountable …Maintaining accountability is a big part of office morale, and it encourages workers to act with integrity, leading to an excellent workplace culture.… including yourselfGood bosses don’t pick a scapegoat or explain away mistakes. In fact, experienced managers admit it when they fail in order to create a workplace that’s a safe environment for experimentation. As former US Marine Angie Morgan  told Business Insider, the best leaders have a narrow gap between what they say they’ll do and what they actually accomplish. It’s about “making sure you’re the person who can follow through on your commitments,” she said, and setting an example for the rest of your team. You ask politelyInsecure bosses bark out orders and behave like divas in order to establish their dominance. If you always say the magic word and are generally polite, then that’s definitely a good sign. You give supportBosses should build trust with their employees by providing a reasonable amount of support and guidance. Obviously, you don’t need to hold anyone’s hand, but throwing people into the deep end isn’t ideal, either. You remove obstaclesBad bosses throw up roadblocks that make it harder for people to succeed and do their jobs. Great managers should actively work to make the lives of their employees easier. You’re a good coachCoaches don’t just sit back on the sidelines twiddling their thumbs. But they don’t run onto the field and start playing, either - unless they’re that one scary dad who takes the youth recreational soccer league way too seriously.Good bosses are like good coaches: They command respect and provide the right blend of praise and constructive criticism to bring out the best in their employees. You’re able to manage expectationsBad bosses often disappoint or confuse their teams by presenting inaccurate pictures about how things are at the office - e.g., talking up how well the company’s doing and then springing news of layoffs on everyone. Good managers are honest and open. You give feedbackGood employees crave feedback to learn how they can improve and grow. Great bosses are happy to oblige.Recently, experts have noted that the  feedback process at many companies is broken  because it’s too subjective. As leade rship experts Marcus Buckingham and Ashley Goodall write in the  Harvard Business Review, it’s better to share your personal reaction to an employee’s behavior than an overall assessment of their performance. For example: “This is how that came across for me,” or “This is what that made me think.”You keep the environment open and transparentTransparency makes for  a happy office culture. You ask for insightEmployees want to feel heard.Obviously, at the end of the day, you’re responsible for making the final judgment. But once in a while, if the situation calls for it, good bosses reach out to their workers to get their insights and opinions. You explain yourselfGood managers don’t expect anyone to read their minds. They outline a clear vision and provide their team with the knowledge and tools to achieve it.You care about solutionsWhen the going gets tough, the weak bosses find someone to blame. Good managers focus on finding a solution to the problem, rather than thro wing people under the bus.You care about challenging your employeesBored workers are unhappy workers. The best bosses check in with their workers to ensure that they’re being challenged. You don’t micromanage, but you’re not too hands-offCarefully examine the capabilities of your workers in order to achieve a good balance. Could you give any of them more responsibilities? Is there anything you can start delegating? You check in with your employeesYou don’t pop in to nag people like Bill Lumbergh in “Office Space.” You genuinely check in to talk to - not  at- your employees in order to find out their goals and worries. You have a sense of humorIt’s important to never take the joking too far in the office. That being said, good bosses take their work seriously - not themselves. It’s good to have a laugh with your employees. You care about the dreams and goals of your employeesThe best bosses are invested in their employees. That means that they’re actively concerned w ith the professional goals and aspirations of their workers. You’re not nice just for the sake of being niceBeing too nice of a boss can actually be rather cruel,  as Betty Liu points out in a LinkedIn article.  Artificially sweet managers heap on undeserved praise, then yank the rug out from under their employees later on.So don’t play nice because you don’t like conflict. Be authentic and real with your workers. You’ll be doing them a big favor. You’re a good listenerThis is the main reason why  introverts make quite good bosses. Many people have had a manager who  loved  to talk. Rarer - and infinitely more appreciated - are those bosses who are quality listeners. Good listening skills shows your employees that you’re seriously considering their opinions and needs. You take an interest in your employees’ livesGood bosses don’t cross the line into nosiness. Still, they care enough to ask about peoples’ summer plans, kids, and elderly parents. This interest will dem onstrate to employees that their boss actually cares about them, making both parties more invested in their working relationship. You tailor your approachDifferent employees have different needs. “One size fits all” just isn’t going to cut it in the workplace. The best bosses are flexible. This allows them to fulfill all sorts of roles in order to better cater to the needs of their workers.According to Sally Boyle, international head of human capital management at Goldman Sachs, every manager should get to know the people on their team. Specifically, “what makes them tick, what opportunities they might want, what they need to get better at, what feedback they need to have.”You demand effort, not perfectionGreat leaders demand - and inspire - employees to work hard. They lead by example and give workers the tools they need to succeed through hard work.Bosses who are too rigid are simply unrealistic. People make mistakes. It happens. If you punish small failures, you’ll j ust stifle innovation, experimentation and proactivity in your office. You suspect you’re an awful leader sometimesWhen  Business Insider previously spoke with author Simon Sinek about leadership, he explained that individuals who believe themselves to be excellent leaders are often, in fact, terrible leaders.Great bosses recognize that authority and rank do not equal leadership abilities. As a result, they are constantly working to improve themselves. These quality bosses might even feel inadequate at times. However, just the fact that they recognize their own flaws renders them superior to many managers that totally lack self-awareness.  This article first appeared on Business Insider.    You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

One decision separates the wealthy from the non-wealthy

One decision separates the wealthy from the non-wealthy One decision separates the wealthy from the non-wealthy The problem with most people’s lives is that they are being shielded from the consequences of their behavior. There’s little to no accountability. The fastest way to make success inevitable in your life is to only do work that is incentive-based. Only do that which you are rewarded and punished for the quality of your work. Everything you do needs to matter to the outcomes, consequences, and results you get in life.So what is the decision? The decision is to take complete ownership of every decision in your life. And how you do that is by only doing things in which you are compensated based on performance.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! This goes completely against the norms in society. It goes against public education - which shields people from progressing at their own rates. It goes against most job structures, wherein a person is paid an hourly rate or salary. If you want to make dramatic strides forward, you must only work in environments where the consequences of your actions are immediate and REAL. You need to be demanded by your situation to come up with a result. This article will show you how:Are You A Part Of The “Results Economy”?Founder of the exclusive entrepreneurial coaching platform, Strategic Coach, Dan Sullivan distinguishes between those who are in the “Time-and-Effort Economy” with those who are in the “Results Economy.”If you’re in the time and effort economy, you are focused on being busy. You actually believe the amount of time and energy you put into something merits praise. Those who are focused on being “busy” are protected in some way from the consequences of their actions. They’re not being forced by necessity to come up with a solution. Chances are, they are an employee. They are part of a bureaucracy. And they’re striving to follow rules rather than break them.Conversely, when you are in the result s economy, you are only focused on achieving a specific result. You are focused on results because if you don’t get the result, there will be consequences to pay - for you and others. You’re not worried about your reputation. You’re not worried about following the rules of ridiculous systems which are seeking to make you their slave anyways.Dr. Thomas Stanley found in his research that those who are paid based on RESULTS are most courageous and also the most wealthy. You actually have to take risks. You can’t be sheltered from the consequences of your behavior. And you certainly can’t be a part of a system which supports “busyness” to maintain the status quo. Hence, Dan Sullivan says:Entrepreneurs have crossed “the risk line” from the “Time-and-Effort Economy” to the “Results Economy.” For them, there’s no guaranteed income, no one writing them a paycheck every two weeks. They live by their ability to generate opportunity by creating value for their cliente le. Sometimes, they - and you - will put in a lot of time and effort and get no result. Other times, they don’t put in much time and effort and get a big result. The focus for entrepreneurs always has to be on results or there’s no revenue coming in. If you work for an entrepreneur, guess what! This is true for you, too. Though you probably have a guaranteed income, it’s important to understand that the business you work in exists inside The Results Economy, even if you’re sheltered somewhat from seeing that. I say this not to make you feel insecure, but to show you how to succeed in this environment: by maximizing your results while minimizing the time and effort it takes to get them.Flow Triggers And “Forcing Functions”Flow is a mental state where you’re completely absorbed in what you’re doing. You’re totally engaged. No distractions. In such a state, time slows down and you begin operating at higher and more subconscious levels. One of the primary “flow triggers” is immediate feedback. Hence, in extreme sports where the possibility of injury is high, flow is a regular experience. If you don’t land that trick, you could be in the hospital. Immediate feedback. If you want more flow in your life, you need to get faster and harder feedback for your behavior. You need to feel the consequences of your performance. You need to be in the Results Economy - not the Time and Effort Economy. In fact, one of the ways to produce more flow in your life is by creating much, much shorter timelines. Give yourself only 60 minutes to write the article and then, once the timer goes off, push publish regardless of what you came up with. Tell your partner or adviser that you’ll have your work to them far sooner than they expect. Make your goals public, with public deadlines. You can create immediate feedback for your behavior in the form of “forcing functions.” According to entrepreneur, Dan Martell, “A forcing function is any task, activity or event that forces you to take action and produce a result.”A forcing function is exactly how it sounds - something external that’s been put in place to FORCE YOU TO FUNCTION how you desire to function. An example Dan Martell uses is a story between him and his younger brother, Moe. Dan asked Moe about his business goal for the next 3 months, to which Moe told him the goal. Then Dan asked, “Based on today’s understanding of the work involved, etc. how likely would you be to hit your goal in 3 months?”“Hmmmm, proba bly 60â€"70% I would guess,” Moe answered. Then Dan asked, “Whose the most important person in your life?”“My wife,” Moe replied.“I then asked him to visualize a person with a gun to the head of his wife, and he knew - 100,000% that if he didn’t hit his goal within 3 months that the guy would pull the trigger. There wasn’t a doubt in his mind that the trigger would be pulled…. How likely are you to hit your goal?” Dan asked.“100%, there isn’t a doubt I could do it” Moe said.So what changed?MOTIVATION.That’s the power of a forcing function. It’s something that’s embedded within the situation that forces you to succeed. It forces motivation to happen. Because if you don’t produce a RESULT, there will be immediate feedback. To quote historian Will Durant, “I think the ability of the average man could be doubled if it were demanded, if the situation demanded.”Motivation and environment are two inextricably connected things. Motivation ISN’T INTERNA L - but situational. If you want more motivation, you need a more demanding situation. Your behavior needs to be consequential - and the more immediate the feedback the better. The more consequential your behavior, the more flow you’ll have in your life. The more you’ll be forced to adapt and grow.Do You Have Skin In The Game?“Bureaucracy is a construction by which a person is conveniently separated from the consequences of his or her actions.” - Nassim Nicholas TalebIn the recent book, SKIN IN THE GAME, Nassim Nicholas Taleb explains that if your behavior doesn’t bear immediate consequence, your performance will be low. Even more than that though - if your performance isn’t consequential, then you don’t really care about what you’re doing. As Taleb explains:“If you do not take risks for your opinion, you are nothing.”“How much you truly “believe” in something can be manifested only through what you are willing to risk for it.”From a psychological persp ective, you are either “approaching” something or trying to “avoid” something from happening.Offense or defense.Unfortunately, if you’re in the Time and Energy Economy, you’re probably also “avoidance”-oriented. In other words, your only concern is about avoiding getting in trouble, or avoiding getting caught, or avoiding doing much work at all.Only those in the Results Economy, whose behavior is consequential - the more immediate the better - are on offense. They are the one’s taking risks. They’re less concerned about the ground they’ve made and more concerned about advancing their position. They’re fine taking more risks. They’re fine putting important things on the line, because they are convicted about what they’re doing.Hence, Telab explains, “What matters isn’t what a person has or doesn’t have; it is what he or she is afraid of losing.” If you’re afraid of losing what you’ve currently got, you probably won’t risk it. You’ll proba bly do everything you can to AVOID losing it. And therefore, you’ll have given up your WHY. You’ll have stunted your progression. The more you have to lose, the more fragile you become. The more you become a slave to your current position and thus stop seeking to take risks for what you believe in.The Only Types Of Relationships That Become “Exponential”There are two types of relationships: transaction-based or transformation-based.Most relationships are transactional - where one party makes the rules and the other party submits. Once one of the members of the group is unsatisfied by the terms of the relationship, it ends. People in these relationships are usually “takers,” not genuine givers. In transformational relationships - both people are “givers” who contribute to the ongoing evolution of the relationship. The whole becomes different from the sum of the parts. There is high expectations in these relationships, but also openness. Both parties are completely inve sted in the relationship. Yet, unlike transaction-based relationships, both parties are also completely free. They give because they WANT TO, not because they feel obligated to.That is perhaps the definition of successful relationships - to get other people to help you BECAUSE THEY WANT TO, not because they’ve been manipulated to.According to Pearson’s Law: “When performance is measured, performance improves. When performance is measured and reported back, the rate of improvement accelerates.”Transformational relationships have embedded accountability. Performance matters - because both parties are invested in the relationship and both parties deal with the consequences/outcomes of performance. Complete honesty is essential.Does your behavior matter to those around you? What about the people around you? Are these relationships transactional or transformational? If transactional - then one person is a slave to the other. They are walking on egg-shells. They’re doing everyth ing they can to avoid a negative outcome. They aren’t really contributing. No one in these types of relationships can truly be happy.ConclusionIf you are paid based on performance, your pay will go up.If you get immediate feedback with natural consequences of your behavior - you’ll be in a flow state more. Your performance will increase. Your pay will increase. Your happiness will increase. It’s not great power that creates great responsibility. It’s great responsibility that creates power. It’s not confidence that creates success. It’s successful behavior that creates confidence. It’s not personality that creates behavior. It’s behavior that creates personality. If you want to true freedom in your life, you need to take responsibility. Freedom can only exist with consequence - not from the absence of consequence. You are only free when your behavior matters. The only way to increase the freedom in your life is by making your behavior matter more - and by experiencing the REAL consequences of your behavior. The only way to have freedom in your relationships is when both parties have skin in the game. When both parties in invested. When the consequences of each person’s performance impacts the whole - and everyone involved embraces this reality because there is mutual love, respect, and responsibility.Ready to upgrade?I’ve created a cheat sheet for putting yourself into a PEAK-STATE, immediately. A Practical Guide to Being Better Than Your Boss

A Practical Guide to Being Better Than Your Boss A Practical Guide to Being Better Than Your Boss Here’s Phil Libin, co-founder and CEO of Evernote: “Hiring people smarter than yourself is the long-term answer to your micromanagement problem. I take it very seriously, and I encourage all of my direct  reports to apply it to their direct reports, all the way down the organization to the most junior levels. This is hard to do, and were certainly not perfect at executing the rule all  the time, but we come pretty close.” And  Ryan Blair, author of Nothing to Lose, Everything to Gain: “It is my goal to be in awe of every person I hire. I want to see traits in her or him that are more dynamic or more positive than my own abilities in that area, because I know that simply by working with that person, I will be able to grow and the company will prosper, thanks to this continuous reach for improvement.” But while experts are extolling the virtues of hiring people who are better than their bosses, employees are often grumbling about the very same thing. How many times have we heard friends, relatives, coworkers, or ourselves complain about incompetent leaders and managers. Employees, by and large, still ascribe to a traditionally hierarchical approach to the workplace: we want our bosses to be smarter than us; if they aren’t, their leadership is illegitimate, and we feel they should be removed from their positions. Employees â€" it’s time we readjust our thinking. If we’re smarter than our bosses, then, by most accounts, our bosses are actually doing something right. With that, I offer three tips for employees who find that they are smarter than their bosses, with the hopes that they’ll stop complaining and start seeing the benefits of their situations. Oh, and if our CEO, Miles, is reading this â€" these totally are not culled from personal experience. You’re somehow both the best CEO ever and the smartest guy in the room. Please don’t fire me. 1. Realize that They Made the Right Decision According to Blair, the semi-legendary Bill Gates makes a habit of hiring people who are smarter than he is. Libin jokes that, thanks to his hiring practices, he’s the dumbest person at Evernote â€" and maybe that’s exactly why his company was Inc.’s Company of the Year in 2011. The point is: if your boss hired you, and you are smarter than they are, then your boss made the right decision. You may be smarter, but your boss clearly knows how to manage. Take your boss’s willingness to hire a smarter subordinate as a sign of your boss’s strong management practices. And if your boss didn’t hire a smarter employee on purpose? If your boss still manages you poorly and tries to assert dominance? Recognize that you may be in a position to change that. 2. Flaunt What You’ve Got   Your boss hired a smarter employee because they saw your potential. They saw the talent you could bring to the table. Don’t go hiding your light under a bushel, then. It can be tempting to downplay your skills. You don’t want to seem like you’re challenging the boss’s authority. However, downplaying your skills is exactly what the boss doesn’t want you to do. Smarter employees are good for the company â€" show off your skills and watch your employer grow. 3. Learn from Each Other Of course, while you’re busy showing off your skills, don’t let it all go to your head. You may be smarter than your boss with respect to the job that you do, but a boss who knows to hire smarter employees is a boss who knows how to manage a workplace. You’re great at what you do â€" and, chances are, your boss is great at what they do. So learn from your boss: see the way they manage people who are smarter than them; watch how they lead a group of people who excel in the very fields that the boss fails. Use these lessons to inform your own habits as an employee. You may be a boss one day, and you can draw from your own bosses’ best practices. And even if you never are in charge of a team, you’ll still be working with other people all your life, both in and out of the office. You won’t always be the smartest person in the room. And, of course, a great boss knows to learn from their employees as well. As Libin says, “I interact with roughly 30 Evernote people on a daily basis, and I can say without hesitation that they all do their jobs better than I could hope to. Every time we have a discussion about work, I learn something.” Of course, when all is said and done, some bosses who hire smarter employees  are  incompetent. If your boss really is terrible well, thats a much sadder story for another day.

Why Police Departments Are Facing Recruitment Problems

Why Police Departments Are Facing Recruitment Problems Why Police Departments Are Facing Recruitment Problems The problem of recruitment and retention of police officers in departments across the United States is well documented. Many law enforcement agencies have difficulty not only identifying and hiring qualified candidates but keeping them as well. High Attrition in Law Enforcement You’ve probably seen multiple news stories about the critical shortage of personnel in professions like nursing and teaching, but probably not so much about the shortage of police officers. In fact, you  have  probably  never heard of a study by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Analysis Center which showed the attrition rate for police officers (14 percent) is higher than both nursing (12 percent) and teaching (13 percent). Opportunities Abound for Qualified Candidates The great news for you is that most police departments are in a constant hiring cycle. With so many officers retiring or resigning each year, there are almost always vacancies, which means there are ample opportunities for you to get hired. Before you do, though, you need to understand why it’s so difficult for police to hire qualified officers, to begin with, and what it will take for you to qualify for a job as a police officer. Decreasing Pool of Potential Police Most people understand that law enforcement careers aren’t for everyone, but it seems, at least anecdotally, that the pool of available candidates continues to shrink. Several factors have converged to make it more difficult than ever to find good officers, and diminish interest in policing careers. Relatively Low Pay First, even though more and more people are earning college degrees, salaries for law enforcement officers â€" especially starting salaries, don’t reflect the higher earning expectations of newer generations of job candidates. What many younger job seekers fail to recognize, though, are the benefits of trading a lower salary for an earlier and potentially much more lucrative retirement situation at the end of their career. Disqualifying Behaviors Another, even more, difficult obstacle to overcome for departments are the evolving tolerances of society as a whole for minor crimes and illicit drug use. As the culture accepts the use of marijuana and other drugs, and as the trend towards legalization of pot continues, more and more young people engage in behaviors that will ultimately keep them from getting a criminal justice job. Lack of Physical Fitness The increasingly sedentary lifestyle of younger generations, the increased occurrence of obesity, and the relatively low fitness level of so many people have also lead to a smaller group of potential police officer candidates. With the potentially demanding physical rigors of police work, departments are finding that fewer job applicants can meet their weight and physical fitness standards. Credit Issues Affect Hireability Financial concerns, too, have decreased the pool of candidates. During the background investigation, most agencies run a credit check. While they are typically not so concerned with the individual credit score, they won’t hire people who are so indebted that they wont be able to meet their obligations with the salary they’ll earn, or people who have significant debts that have been turned over to collections. Plan Early to Stay Qualified With the need for qualified officers so high, you have plenty of opportunities and options to get hired in a law enforcement career. You can’t, however, change your past. Take care now to avoid the kinds of mistakes that will keep you out of a job, and understand that, when it comes to many criminal justice careers, seemingly simple mistakes can have long-term consequences. The bottom line is that most police departments, especially at the state and local levels, need good people. And though the pay is not as high as other criminal justice careers, there are still plenty of great reasons to become a police officer. If you’d like to join the force, you simply need to start now to get yourself prepared for a long and rewarding career.

Job Search On the Sly Getting Out Without Getting Fired

Job Search On the Sly Getting Out Without Getting Fired Job Search On the Sly Getting Out Without Getting Fired A job search can be a thrilllike window-shopping for your future. But if you are feeling fed up in your current role, it can compound that feeling and zap your motivation for your day-to-day reality. You need the job you have to fuel your professional reinvention, so try not to get so focused on your plans for the future that you get sloppy in the here and now and jeopardize your current gig. If you are looking for a new job, then you are also planning an exit strategy to remove yourself from your current situation. Keep your exit strategy clean. If there has been drama or undue stress at your current job, try to put your feelings about that into perspective. You are handling this. You are doing the legwork to secure a better fit.   Try to keep yourself as emotionally organized as you can. Don’t use job searching at work as a strategy to cope when you get frustrated with a job that no longer suits you. That will make you feel desperate about your search, unmotivated about your current job and emotionally chaotic. You need to stay in control of this situation, and one way you do that is by understanding and managing how you feel about it.   Job searches take time; plan for at least three months. Once your search heats up, you will need to ask for time out of the office, maybe at odd hours, perhaps even a couple of days or weeks in a row. Be on your most professional behavior in support of your search and in preparation for your exit. This will simplify the task of getting the flexibility you need. Professionalism begets professionalism. Action items Take care of your search-related action items out of the office during lunch. Answer your emails privately on your phone. If you need to make phone calls, head out of the office to do so. Go to your car or your favorite coffee shop and make sure that no one from work is around when you conduct your phone interviews or follow-ups. These items are time sensitive and need attention immediately, but take care of them discretely.     Searching Trolling around for opportunities isn’t time-sensitive, and you don’t want to get busted perusing Simply Hired posts while you are supposed to be working. Reviewing job ads takes time and focus. It’s easy to get absorbed in the project, and to someone who wanders in and sees what’s on your screen it’s obvious what you are doing. This scenario is uncomfortable and unprofessional. Avoid it. Search job postings privately. Internal job searching Companies have a variety of policies when it comes to internal job searching. Before you launch an internal search, find out how that works with your employer and decide if you are comfortable with the arrangement. If you opt to go for it, keep in mind that hiring a new staff member away from another team is always delicate news to share on the management side, so those interviewing you probably share your aim to keep it confidential until there is news to report. But don’t be shy to state your privacy concerns directly during your interview.   You are not doing anything deceitful or wrong by pursuing an internal opportunity, but you have every right to request discretion. Also be discrete with you calendar and make sure to block your interviews as private appointments.         Remember You want to be in control of this news, so don’t tip your hand until there’s a new job offer in it.

Do you want to quit Ask yourself these 6 questions first

Do you want to quit Ask yourself these 6 questions first Do you want to quit Ask yourself these 6 questions first “I heard a Jeep fell on you,” I said. “Now where did you hear that?”A wry smile sent wrinkles across the face of my high school English teacher. We were waiting for a show to start - Jersey Boys at the Tennessee Performing Arts Center. Seeing as it had been 10 years since I’d seen him, the Jeep question was the most interesting thing I could think of to say.I glanced at my brother, trying to wordlessly confirm the story. Wide eyes told me that yes, something had happened, but no, I probably wasn’t supposed to talk about it.After a long stare, my old professor chuckled.“It didn’t fall on me. It ran over me. I was working on it in my driveway.” “Weren’t those the first sick days you’d ever taken?” my sibling chimed in. (I think he was relieved we wouldn’t be sent to detention for asking.) “Pretty much,” the teacher responded. “Geez.” “Yeah. I had somewhere around 400 when I left the school.” “Did they - ” “Oh yeah … they paid them out.” - - - Dr. Jones wasn’t “renowned” in our small town high school. “Legendary” probably would have been the more accurate adjective. You likely learned about him the first day you stepped into the building.I can’t even remember his first name. It only occurred to me a few sentences ago it isn’t “Doctor.”Is it Bob? Fred? Larry?Nothing sounds right. “Mister” might be it.First-nameless Jones spent 48 years in the same job. 48 years. In a row. Contrast that with, over 40% of millennials who leave a position in less than 1/10th of that time. There are more options these days, sure, but I can’t help feeling we quit sometimes because there is nothing better to do.I have quit a lot of things in my life - choir, golf, and a mime troupe (don’t ask). Other times people have quit me - friends, bosses, or iHeart Radio (that one you can ask about).Once upon a time, big decisions were knee-jerk reactions. Now, I try and ask these six questions.1. Did I do what I said I would do? Recently my friend told me about the greatest compliment he had ever received. On a call with his client, the person on the other end of the line struggled to find the words to describe Kyle’s performance. They couldn’t exactly put their finger on what he had done. After a moment, they finally spit this out:“It’s weird … you said what you were going to do. And then you just did it.”I have started to believe integrity is the first, last, and only marker of success. Who cares whether or not you proclaimed a new years resolution? So long as you follow through on that decision. Who cares whether or not you started a business? So long as you made the choice.Take your time to decide on your goals, but by the time the words come out of your mouth, by God you better be able to see them to fruition. No matter the cost.2. Have I been further than I’ve ever been?Right now, my 59-year-old father is teaching himself how to build an app.The program, designed for a very specific job rol e in a very specific field, is a product of his own creation. It does not exist anywhere else in the world. It will solve a problem for many.(I’m telling you that part because I am sick of hearing people say things like “there are no more good ideas!”)But what might happen if things don’t take off the way he thinks they should? If he read the market wrong or doesn’t figure out how to sell it or simply gets bored?I asked. He said this:“Well. I’ll have learned how to build an app.”Nothing in life is wasted, so long as you extract the lessons. I love what Dave Ramsey says about growth:“[Consistent growth] is the only difference between having 20 years of experience and having 1 year of experience 20 times.”3. Is this becoming a pattern? One bad trend popping up in this decade is a market I like to call “The Escape Industry.”Culprits and key agitators of The Escape Industry include the dream mongers, those who urge others not to run to something, but from somethin g. Culture of your company a little off? Quit the job! Significant other says you aren’t committed? Quit the relationship! Facebook page not going viral after 2 weeks? Quit the effort! I hate to say it, but my generation specifically is terrible about this. We want what we want NOW, and if we can’t get it, we will go elsewhere. This applies to stores, jobs, relationships, or our Netflix account. It makes me sad.At times, there are very good reasons to quit. But other times, serial surrender is a symptom of those who lack the courage or will to implement change where they are. They will bounce from job to job, idea to idea, person to person, never achieving the depth life has to offer in any arena.I hope that isn’t you.4. Am I going to be able to quit without regret? If you can’t go without looking back, don’t quit. There are obviously still issues to be resolved.5. Have I executed this position to fulfillment?Don’t tell anyone, but Dwayne Johnson is one of my favorite people.Regardless of how you feel toward the work he does, how many other people do you know who have completely switched industries and were still able to make as deep an impact?Excellence beg ets excellence. The Rock was not able to undergo such a radical shift in activity because he is lucky or blessed, but because he executed his wrestling career to fulfillment. He became the absolute best he could be before making the change. He went as far as he could go.Then, with the leverage already provided from his commitment to the WWE, he leaped into a whole new world.6. Have I asked the opinion of other people who matter in my life?Whenever I’m struggling with a decision, I like to remember these words:“Plans fail with no counsel, but with many counselors they succeed.”My wife is a genius. Every time I make a dumb decision, it’s because I didn’t ask her thoughts. Sometimes, she affirms what I was already thinking. Other times, she tells me I am being an idiot. All times, I only have half the information for making my choice when I refuse to include her.The solution for gaining the right answer on any decision typically looks something like this:Time + Advice + Advic e + Advice + Your Own Intent = Clarity Notice that “emotion” does not appear anywhere in this equation. Emotion is fickle and fluid and all to often influenced by your level of hunger. Gathering advice, on the other hand neutralizes any misguided whim you might be feeling due to a lack of Larabars.Do your diligence. Get the information you need. Then, if you must, take the leap.Much love,- Todd BAdditional readingNote: After 3 years of writing weekly on the Internet, I’ve found I become less and less tolerant to people who spit out what we must assume to be facts with no actual foundation. The worst offenders of this are typically people like me - Motivators who are too busy “hustling” to dig deeply.
